Vape aerosol that users breathe from a device and exhale is not just water vapor. It may contain:

  • Nicotine, the drug in tobacco that gets users hooked
  • Ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs
  • Propylene glycol, often used in food and meds
  • Vegetable glycerin, often used in food and make-up
  • Flavorings, like acetyl propionyl and diacetyl

Health Risks1

Vape aerosol can harm users and non-users exposed to secondhand aerosol. It may have things like:

  • Cancer-causing toxins
    • Formaldehyde: Used to embalm
    • Benzene: Found in rubber cement
  • Metals and other chemicals
    • Cadmium: Used to make batteries
    • Lead: Once used in paint
    • Toluene: Used to make paint

Safety

  • Ask people not to vape in your home or car.
    • Going to another room, or opening windows, is not enough.
    • In California, it is illegal to vape in a car if anyone is under 18 years old.3
  • Make sure that no one vapes around your kids. Be firm.
