    How to Help Kids Quit Vaping

    These tools are meant to equip you with information to help young people quit vaping.

    1. Educate Yourself

    Vapes -- also known as e-cigarettes -- are the most commonly used tobacco products among U.S. middle and high school students. The U.S. Surgeon General has declared vaping among youth an epidemic. Vapes come in many varieties and are often easy to conceal, at home and at school.

    The increased use of vapes is driven, in part, by the belief that vapes are safe and are not addictive like cigarettes. However, the e-liquid in most vape products contains nicotine, an addictive substance that impacts adolescent brain development. 

    2. Talk to Your Kids

    • Pick a time when you’re not rushed and a place where you both feel comfortable.
    • Ask open-ended questions about what they think about vaping.
    • Share the information you've learned about the effects of nicotine.
    • Just listen and stay positive. Don’t nag or judge.
    • Be persistent. It may take many talks.


    3.  Be Engaged 

    • Spend time together. Take a walk or watch a movie. This will keep their mind off vaping.
    • Make your home smoke-free. Only allow people to vape or smoke outside.
    • Praise their quit milestones.
    • Don’t react to withdrawal mood swings. They aren’t about you. Stay positive.
    • Don’t doubt they can quit. Believe in them.
    • Don’t give up. Relapse is common. The first two weeks are often the hardest. Stress and being around other people who vape are common reasons for relapse.

    Kids and Vapes Don't Mix

    • A very small amount of e-liquid can be poisonous to young children. In 2019, Poison Control has managed nearly 5,000 exposure cases to e-cigarette devices.
    • Tobacco, vape and marijuana smoke all contain chemicals that are harmful to pregnant women and young children. There is no risk-free level of secondhand exposure.
